In response to recent regulatory changes and emerging concerns, we’re proud to introduce the Basic Overdose Prevention (BOP) certificate program.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) revisions to CFR 42 substantially relaxed regulations surrounding the distribution of methadone and other opioid treatments. While aimed at improving access to care, these changes also pose significant challenges regarding patient safety and provider liability.
The BOP program arose from considering a proactive approach to addressing these risks. Designed to educate and empower patients receiving opioid treatment, completing the BOP certificate program ensures patients as well as physicians that clients thoroughly understand overdose risks and safe medication practices before receiving take-home doses. By integrating informed consent into the certification process, we aim to mitigate provider liability while greatly enhancing patient safety.
Our program is not a return to pre-pandemic rigidity but rather employs a balanced approach that bridges patient autonomy with safety concerns. Through BOP certification, patients gain crucial knowledge to reduce their overdose risk, empowering them to responsibly take control of their treatment journeys.
